Guide to Colorado State Parks

Planning Your Trip
There are a few options for park entry. Each park has a ranger station at the entrance with daily entry or annual pass options available. The Colorado State Park & Wildlife website has all of the pass options for sale and information on the day pass prices. If you are a Colorado resident it is also an option to add the Colorado State Park annual pass to your vehicle registration for a lower fee.
Many of the parks offer equipment rentals and camping options. Make sure to look ahead online at the reservation options as you plan your trip. Camping goes quickly so it is a good idea to book months in advance and pay attention to when the reservations open up to get your desired dates booked.
Colorado weather can be unpredictable so be sure to pack extra clothes, rain jackets, and wear layers. Depending on the activity you choose you should also consider proper footwear, hats, snacks, and water bottles. Sun protection and first aid are also important for the safety of your family.

Activities for Kids & Family
Choosing the right park based on what you want your family outing to look like is important. There are many different activities offered at the state parks for a balance of relaxation and adventure.

Easy and kid friendly hikes are available at majority of the state parks. Look ahead at the park maps to find a good option for a distance everyone is able to complete. It’s a good idea to let the kids set the pace of the hike and have plenty of snacks and water.
*Mom Tip -Turn the hike into a scavenger hunt to keep them engaged
Colorado’s lakes and reservoirs offer a variety of water activities. You will need to plan on arriving early due to large crowds at some of the Lakes closer to Denver, but the swim beaches offer calm water and lots of fun activities. Reserving paddleboards, kayaks and other equipment is available upon arrival, as equipment permits. Boat rentals should be booked in advance by checking the park’s website.
Fishing can be another family activity for all ages to enjoy. It is a fun way to introduce kids to the outdoors and many parks have stocked lakes, easy shoreline access, and amenities for young anglers. Bring simple gear (child sized fishing pole, bait, snacks) and make sure to purchase a fishing license before participating in this activity.
*Mom Tip – Some parks hold Learn to Fish events with equipment provided and park staff available to guide the family through all of the steps. Check the park’s website for these events.
Colorado state parks offer endless opportunities to explore the outdoors, with something for everyone – from scenic hikes and wildlife watching to water activities and camping. Whether you’re planning a quick day trip or a weekend getaway, these parks provide the perfect setting for making memories with your loved ones.
